FAQs

Frequently asked questions

I already have a website that I would like to revamp, can I keep my domain name?

Yes you can. So long as you have access to the account where the domain is registered (the domain registrar), it will be possible to edit the settings of that domain to point it to your new website.

What about email?

If you already have email set up on your own domain, maybe with Outlook or Google for example, you can continue to use those services. We can modify your domain settings so that it only affects your website and not your email.

If you don’t yet have email on your domain and would like to have it, you could either use a service like Outlook or Gmail, or you could use the email service provided with the web hosting by Siteground.

Will I be able to edit my website myself?

Yes you will have full administrator access to your website, the same as I will. We will have a Zoom meeting where I show you how to make edits to your site and you will be free to make whatever changes you like. Many people find that if they don’t regularly work on their website, they forget how it works. In this case, you can always ask me to make the edits for you. Simple changes can be made quickly and inexpensively.

Will I have access to my web hosting control panel?

Yes, your hosting package will be your own – it won’t be shared with anyone else. If you decide later on that you want to pay Siteground directly for your web hosting, rather than going through me as an intermediary, that can be arranged quite easily and with no disruption to your website or email.

Can you register my domain name for me?

I could but I won’t, and it’s very important that nobody else should either. Your domain name can be of crucial importance to your business and it is vital that its registration should be under your control. I recommend using Google Domains to register new domains, or if you already have domains with another registrar, you can add a new one there. I will most likely need to have access to configure the domain, and Google Domains make this process very easy, without requiring you to give me your personal account access.

How do I know my website won't get hacked?

That’s a difficult thing to guarantee, but the way I build and maintain your website will minimise the risk of it getting hacked and also allow me to fix it for you with little or no loss of data if it does happen.

  1. Your website will use super secure web hosting from Siteground. This includes a firewall and multiple other security features at server level.
  2. It will have a security plug-in to protect it at site level.
  3. I will log in once a week to ensure that all of your software is up to date (more often if I become aware of a particular vulnerability that may affect your site).
  4. I use as few plug-ins as possible, and will never install those that are not well maintained by their developers.

What if my website does get hacked?

This is all too common on poorly maintained websites but fortunately very rare on those that are well configured and well maintained. Should your website be hacked in spite of the above precautions, I should be notified very quickly by the security software and will restore your website to a back-up taken the previous day and identify and fix the vulnerability that allowed the attack.

Simple brochure websites do not normally store customers’ personal data, so you are highly unlikely to have to deal with any serious data breaches with such a site.

Will my website be optimised for search engines?

Not really. There are two main axes to SEO – on site optimisation and off site optimisation. On site optimisation is really about the content on the website. You will be providing the site content, so if search engine optimisation is important to you, you should make sure that you understand how to write well optimised content. Off site optimisation is largely about the number and quality of links TO your website FROM other websites. You will need to work over time to build up these incoming links yourself.

Having said that, your website will be well constructed for SEO. That means that it will be fast and that I will ensure that your important keywords end up in the right places on the site. I will install the Yoast SEO plug-in that will help you to analyse the on site optimisation of each of your pages, and will help you to instal Google Analytics so that you can access statistical data about your website’s performance.

If organic search engine optimisation forms an important part of your online marketing strategy, it may be a good idea to ask an SEO specialist to help you.
